How to Write a Resume for New College Grads

Applying For A Good Job As A New College Grad

Applying For A Good Job As A New College Grad

When you’re a new graduate fresh out of college, writing a resume can seem daunting. You have a slight edge if you had a job before college, but even then, the type of resume you might need could be completely different. If you’re going for a job within the field you got your degree in, then you might be a specialized kind of resume. There’s a right way and a wrong way to write a resume, though, regardless of what kind of job you’re applying for. Learning what language isn’t appropriate, knowing how to tout your strengths, understanding your industry, and the right way to list references are all elements that are universal. Here are a few basic pointers about how to write an effective resume that will get you a response from potential employers.

Using Your Scholastic Experience as a Starting Point

If you don’t have any direct job experience, use your scholastic experience as a starting point, such as internships or fellowships. These experiences do count as a certain level of employment that classes don’t, so make sure to list them. In fact, when you’re actually in school still, it’s a good idea to make sure to take at least a few internships in your field to accumulate hands-on knowledge and something to put on your resume. If you can’t find a job right out of college, go ahead and volunteer if possible when you’re still searching. If you show that you’re somehow active in the field, doing current activities, it’ll give the employer to which you’re applying more incentive to pay attention to you.

Knowing Your Industry

Make Sure You Are Prepared For The Job

Make Sure You Are Prepared For The Job

One surefire way to gain attention is to know your industry. If you’re in a specialized field, you can’t go into resume writing with the expectation that a generic administrative one is going to cut it. If you’re applying for jobs within your field, then you need to have a resume appropriate to that field. Usually you can find guides to writing industry-specific resumes on professional association sites. In fact, there are many that cater specifically to young graduates just starting out in the field, and offer free advice. Many times, you’ll discover that the way to write a resume for a specific position is actually much different than you learned in your high school career center. Where you put your education, what you list in your accomplishments, and how you convey your qualifications varies from field to field. For example, with an arts-related background, listing art exhibitions for the curatorial profession is standard fare. This is something you’d never know unless you were in that industry, though, so make sure you research how to write an field-specific resume.

Deciding Whether to Include a Cover Letter

Cover letters can sometimes be considered outdated, but they also allow you to tell a story that a resume doesn’t. It can be hard to let a resume speak for itself, especially if you don’t have a lot of work experience. Therefore, including a cover letter with job applications is advisable for recent college graduates. The only time you wouldn’t include a cover letter is when there are very specific instructions on the job listing of what to include. This probably means that the employer doesn’t want to sift through a stack of superfluous documents, so watch out for that. It will usually be in the actual body of the job listing, with lots of attention drawn to it. If you submit the correct documents, it also demonstrates that you have attention to detail and can follow instructions. Make sure you also spell the name of the institution to which you’re applying correctly. It’s surprising how many job applicants make mistakes on this front.

Acquiring Reliable References

Add Your Reliable References To Your Resume

Add Your Reliable References To Your Resume

Last, but not least, are the references. Putting “references available on request” on your resume is perfectly fine. However, in case you do get the call back, you need to have your references ready. One rule of thumb is to make sure that people know they might be contacted. Ask your references beforehand also what contact info they want given out. This is a good way to make sure that the process goes smoothly for your potential employer. They aren’t going to be impressed if they contact one of your references and the person has no idea who they’re talking about. This can happen sometimes with former professors or advisors. If you had a particularly good relationship with one of your advisors in college, remind them of it immediately after graduation and request a reference.

Why You Should Be Using Xkit with Tumblr

Tumblr Is Very Popular

Tumblr Is Very Popular

With over 197 million blogs, Tumblr is a well-loved and widely used blogging platform that attracts users of all ages and interests. The Dashboard design is simplistic and sleek and blogging on Tumblr is preferred by many because of the ease of posting not only original content, but sharing others’ posted content as well. Although many of Tumblr’s features help to make the site user-friendly, blogging on Tumblr with the addition of the Xkit browser extension is something any Tumblogger should consider due to the invaluable augments it provides to the site!

Safe and Free

The first concern with any add-on or extension to a web browser is to be expected: is it safe? With the prevalence of viruses everywhere online, it’s only natural to want to make sure that something you’re giving access to your web browser is completely safe to use. Xkit is completely safe to use and on top of that, it’s 100% free. The only time Xkit costs money is if you want to use the Xkit mobile app for iOS, and even then it’s a meager cost of $1.99. It’s a well trusted and widely used extension, and if you have any cause for concern it’s as easy as sending a message to the Xkit blog and the developer is more than happy to look into any issues for you. The extension and its developer have become well known for being exceedingly user friendly!

Smooth, Seamless Interface

Xkit Is A Tumblr Extension

Xkit Is A Tumblr Extension

Xkit is designed to make Tumblr run even smoother. Is there a Tumblr feature you don’t like, like the recommended posts or the new pop-up feature that appears when you click on a link from within the dashboard? Xkit has an extension to disable that, making your experience that much smoother. Another great thing about Xkit is that it’s open source, so while you can download pre-existing extensions to make your blogging experience better, you can also design your own extensions and submit them if it’s something you think other people would benefit from. Even if you don’t think other people would benefit from it, it’s still great to have it for yourself as long as it benefits your blogging experience!

Easy to Install

Because Xkit is available for Chrome, Firefox and Opera, it’s easy to find on most major browsers. If you aren’t already using one of these browsers, you should consider switching to one of them for a variety of reasons, not just to get Xkit. Though, once you start using it, you’ll agree that it’s a pretty good reason to switch! For Chrome, it’s as simple as finding the extension in the Chrome Web Store and for Opera and Firefox, it’s in their respective extension lists as well. The Xkit blog provides detailed instructions for installation, giving you step-by-step directions so that any blogger can get an extension to make their lives easier regardless of how well they understand technology. Since the goal of Xkit is to make bloggers’ lives easier, there isn’t a single part of the extension that could be considered hard to use.

Improves Efficiency

Install Tumblr And Start Blogging

Install Tumblr And Start Blogging

The number one reason to download Xkit is, of course, for the results you’ll see. With over 40+ available extensions, there’s something for everyone on the extension. Auto-Tagger is great for people who want to keep specific types of posts tagged for their convenience on their blog, whether it’s with the standard post type (text, video) or something unique like “witty words” for text if you’re looking for a more whimsical blog. XInbox makes Tumblr’s (admittedly faulty) messaging system run smoother, giving you an Outbox of sent messages and the ability to tag answered and published asks as you post them, something that doesn’t exist in Tumblr’s usual interface. For a blogger who posts and reblogs a lot, some of these tweaks are absolutely necessary for making sure your blogging experience is not only a good one, but that your blog remains organized and consistent. For maximum efficiency, any installed Xkit extensions update automatically when an update is available and a pop-up informs you they were updated whenever you log on.

What to Do When You Think She May Have an Eating Disorder

She Might Have An Eating Disorder

She Might Have An Eating Disorder

Eating disorders are a serious illness. If you think your lady may have one, it’s important to intervene, but to do it in a way that feels non-threatening to her. If she feels like she’s being humiliated by you (or anyone else), she will distance herself from you. She will also flat-out refuse to get the help she needs. This will obviously only make things worse.

Be Certain (Look for the Signs)

When you think your lady may have an eating disorder, bring up the issue can sometimes be pretty complex. The last thing you want to do is accuse her of having one, only to discover that she really doesn’t. There are a lot of different things going on with a woman when she has an eating disorder. Things like hormones and chemical imbalances can play a big role with women who have eating disorders. Sometimes it may even be difficult to pinpoint what is going on with her. This is why learning some of the signs of eating disorders is important to helping you know for sure if your lady is struggling with an eating disorder.

Understanding What An Eating Disorder Is, Is The First Step

Understanding What An Eating Disorder Is, Is The First Step

Many people with eating disorders have a hard time eating. If your lady begins giving your various excuses for why she’s not eating, an eating disorder may be the cause. Some of the excuses you may want to look out for deal with chronic toothache, sore throat, and upset stomach. These usually come from weeks (or months) of purging. Every now and then you may catch her eating lots of food (even after using some of these excuses), only to go back to eating little to nothing. This is known as binge eating. With binge eating, she will eat as much as possible (usually it’s food that contains lots of sugars and fats), and then she will purge it all. Many women with eating disorders will report this process time and time again.

Watch how often she goes to the bathroom after she eats. Some women will eating disorders will go vomit immediately after they finish eating. Others will try to wait until no one is paying attention them. If she thinks you may suspect her of her eating disorder, she might even bring plastic bags into the bathroom with her to vomit into. Some will even keep buckets and trash bags in their room where they purge, and then hide the evidence. Loose and missing teeth are also a sign of eating disorders.

Don’t Make Comments About Her Body

If you’re certain that your lady has an eating disorder, it is best that you don’t comment on her body at all. Don’t tell her that she’s too skinny, and definitely don’t tell her that she looks sick, frail, or strange. While you may be able to see the changes in her body, you won’t be able to see them emotionally. Saying anything in regards to her body will usually only make things worse.

Do Not Speak About Her Body... She Will Take It The Wrong Way

Do Not Speak About Her Body… She Will Take It The Wrong Way

You should also avoid complimenting her on her body. You may think by telling her that she looks good will stop her from her harmful habits, but it doesn’t usually work that way. Most women with eating disorders are unable to stop without some type of outside assistance (usually in the form of therapy.

Once you know for a fact that she has an eating disorder, you should then begin discussing it with her. Tell her that you are worried about her health. Ask her if she would be willing to seek therapy for her disorder. You may be met with some resistance, but keep at it. If you can’t get her to get help, try involving her close friends and family members. Sometimes it may take more than just you to show her that you care about her and only want the best for her. Do some research on you own, and then present your findings to her. Don’t try to make decisions for her. She needs to be a part of the process as well.

Why You Shouldn’t Order an Appetizer for the Table

You Shouldn’t Order That Appetizer

You Shouldn’t Order That Appetizer

There are a whole set of rules that people don’t tell you about going out in a group. The first thing that you shouldn’t do if you want to manage your budget is to avoid paying more money. This includes going out to eat. When you do go out, though, it’s common to want to really indulge. One of the things that people who are trying to save money on a meal while still indulging do to balance this out is buy an appetizer for the table. This isn’t really going to work out, and it’s going to be costing you friendship and money in equal measure.

Puts Pressure on Everyone to Chip In

When you decide that everyone really needs some nacho platter in their life, you’re basically decreeing that everyone should either watch everyone else enjoying nachos or chip in to pay for them. This is putting pressure on everyone else that they’re probably going to resent. Coming from someone who knows what it’s like to be struggling to save money as you are, it’s just poor grace to force someone else to consider their budget. The next time you feel like telling everyone that you should all pay for one dish, consider that some people might have an even tighter budget than yours. There’s every chance that you’re going to be forcing someone to not get the entrée they wanted because now they have to pay for 1/4th of a nacho platter they never wanted.

Other People Might Follow Suit

It Can Quickly Turn Into An Expensive Meal

It Can Quickly Turn Into An Expensive Meal

The other thing that might happen when you start tossing out ideas for a table sharing meal is that everyone else might think that’s okay. You might want the nachos, they might want the calamari, and the next thing you know you’re being held to a standard that you don’t know how to meet. If everyone gets an appetizer you might end up spending more than you would have if you’d bought that appetizer and eaten it all yourself. If you don’t want to be forced to shell out cash so that a friend can taste spinach dip, be that considerate of them. It’s going to be better for everyone if the group tab isn’t being run up by one guy not thinking things through.

Makes It More Difficult to Split up the Tip

Not everyone is very good at math. That’s just a fact of life, and it’s not meant to be cruel, but it’s how things go. More often than not, you’ll find that even very intelligent people find it difficult to split a bill. If the place that you’re eating at won’t split it for you (or if you’re all pitching in to pay for a lot of appetizers) it’s going to mean a fair bit of math for you. The more difficult it is for you to decide who owes what, the greater the odds that someone is going to make a simple computation mistake. That could cost you a pretty great amount of cash if it’s made against you. You should keep things as simple as possible.

Isn’t the Best Use of Your Money

Avoid The Temptation Of Ordering An Appetizer

Avoid The Temptation Of Ordering An Appetizer

Appetizers are nothing when it comes to eating out. They’re little bits of food that cost so, so much. It’s just not worth it for you to be spending your cash on them in the first place. Even if you’re going to be eating all of it yourself, it’s just not worth it. For the price of most appetizers (or only slightly more) you could buy a second entrée and get more food and value out of it.

How Obesity and Your Diet Can Impact TMJ Disorder

Be Aware Of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Be Aware Of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Anyone who’s ever had TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder knows how much it sucks. It creates localized pain but can also create pain in other connected areas, which means that you’re suffering in a lot of ways because of one issue. There are a number of causes for TMJ disorder with the main ones being blunt force trauma to the face, movement or erosion of the parts in question, and arthritis. Regardless of the causes, TMJ is not something that is easily fixed. Not only that, but certain things about your lifestyle or your body can actually make it worse, including what you eat and how much you weight.

Sleep Apnea and Bruxism

Many overweight people experience sleep apnea and brusixm, often together. Bruxism is when the jaw is clenched while sleeping, putting tremendous amounts of pressure on the TMJ. This can lead to a displacement or erosion, resulting in the disorder. Sleep apnea can also have an adverse effect on the TMJ and can contribute to night time or daytime bruxism. Most TMJ specialists will ask patients suffering from TMJ disorder if they experience either bruxism or sleep apnea, as both are commonly linked to the disorder.

Eating Habits

You Need To Change Your Eating Habits Right Away

You Need To Change Your Eating Habits Right Away

Every time you eat something crunchy, chewy, or hard, you’re putting stress on your TMJ. So, if you’re in the beginning stages of developing the disorder, anything you eat that requires excessive jaw movement is going to aggravate the problem. Once you have been diagnosed with TMJ you will be advised to avoid any foods that are chewy or crunchy (chewing gum, steak, raw carrots, ice cubes, toffee, etc.). You will also be advised to avoid eating anything that requires you to open your mouth fully, like hamburgers, large sandwiches, and apples. Nuts are also something that anyone with the disorder should avoid. If you’re not really following a healthy diet and tend to eat fast food or other kinds of foods that aren’t good for you, you’re likely eating something on the list of foods that TMJ disorder sufferers should avoid.

Stress

Most people that are overweight and aware of it are stressed by that fact. Stress is a huge contributor to TMJ disorder. This is because when people are stressed they tend to unconsciously clench their jaw when they are awake. This will also happen at night, usually to a greater and more severe degree. Those who suffer from TMJ disorder will likely feel pain in their jaw, neck, and head once they are stressed, giving them a clear indicator as to just how they are feeling. One of the first things a TMJ specialist will recommend is that you work to dispel all areas of unnecessary stress in your life. This includes any stress you may have arising from your body image. Taking steps to lose weight will likely lead to a decrease in that unnecessary stress, which in turn will keep you from clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth both at night or during the day.

Lifestyle Change

Rapid Weight-Loss Is Mandatory

Rapid Weight-Loss Is Mandatory

Most TMJ specialists will recommend weight loss, physical activity, and a diet change to their patients. Combined, all three of these can make significant improvements. Weight loss can eliminate both bruxism and sleep apnea, meaning that the TMJ is not under pressure at night from unconscious teeth grinding. Physical activity not only contributes to weight loss but it also leads to a healthier body overall. The diet change you will have to make after being diagnosed with TMJ will include soft foods that require little to no chewing and won’t make you open your mouth all the way. This means that some of the unhealthier foods that you may enjoy are something you’re going to have to avoid.
